Organ donors |
|
I have to renew my driver's
license soon. I always sign up to be an organ donor. One of the things
you can choose to do while at the DMV, at least in Pennsylvania, is to declare
yourself an organ donor. If you make that decision, they put "Organ Donor"
right on the license below your picture. If you're unable to speak for
yourself and the hospital uses your license to identify you, they know right
away you're a donor. I urge everyone to become donors unless your religious
beliefs forbid such things. Imagine the number of lives you can save by making
this decision. One person's organs can give life to several people.
Don't make the decision alone. Discuss the
options with your family first. The most important thing is to explain to them
you're going to be a donor and they shouldn't stand in the way of the doctors
following your wishes if you die. And it doesn't stop there. You and your
family have to decide when to stop life support. Some people don't want to
ever be on any machines to prolong their life, some set a time limit, while
others will say wait until they're "brain dead". You may also want to talk to
people in the medical field and/or your religious leader before making your
final decision. This isn't something to be taken lightly. Your decision not
only effects you, but also your family.
Some people are afraid to become listed as organ
donors. I've actually heard people say they know if a doctor sees they're an
organ donor, they won't do anything. Doctors aren't going to let you die just
so they can get their hands on your heart or liver. Even if there's a chance
of running into a doctor who would do this, the chances are slim to none.
There are even stories posted all over the internet about these things
happening. So far, none of the stories have been proven to be true. Besides,
most doctors will wait until they can talk to the family before they start
taking organs.
This is yet another reason to discuss your
decision with your family. They can tell the doctor not to follow through with
it until they have time to think. Sometimes the family opposes the donors
wishes and the organs stay in the body.
Please take time to think about becoming an organ
donor. Think of all the people you can help by making this decision. If you
can't think of any religious reasons to stop you, have them stamp "Organ
Donor" on your driver's license.
