Although this page is mostly for
women, some of the information can also be good for men. There are a lot of
things women can do to be less of a target for the crimes against them. No
matter how "tough" you think you are (and there are some tough women out
there) or how safe you think you may be, there are some things which you may
be overlooking. Some things are so simple they can be overlooked, others are
things you may not think about.
While driving:
Keep your doors locked and your windows rolled up.
If you must open a window, open only the driver's side
window. If there are adult passengers in the other seats, they can open their
windows.
If someone approaches your car and tries to open the
door, drive off. If you can't drive off, repeatedly blow your horn. This will
usually scare the person off.
In the event of an accident, stay in your car unless
you have to get out for safety reasons. Relaying insurance information can be
done through a slightly open window or wait until the police arrive.
Because of recent events, at night, if you see flashing
"police" lights and someone tries to pull you over, drive to the nearest
lighted area where other people are around. If the "officer" is in an unmarked
car and not in uniform, tell them to meet you at the local police station.
Shopping malls, etc:
Park as close to the building as possible. At night,
always park in the best lit areas of the lot.
Always be aware of the people around you and what
they're doing.
Carry your purse using a short strap over your shoulder with
the purse under your arm. Never swing your purse behind you or carry it in
your hand.
When returning to your car, have your car keys in your
hand so you get in the car quickly.
If you feel someone is following you to your car,
return to the safety of the building.
Walking at night:
If you have to walk somewhere at night, it's best to
ask at least one other person to go with you.
Always walk in well-lit areas and never take
"shortcuts".
Even if you feel you're walking in a safe area, always
be aware of your surroundings.
Bars, clubs, etc:
Never go to a bar or club by yourself ... always go
with at least one friend. If they have to leave, go with them instead of
staying alone.
Men laugh at women going to the restroom in groups, but
it makes sense. There's truth to the saying "there's safety in numbers".
Don't leave a club with someone you just met or haven't
known for a while.
Never leave your beverage or food unattended.
Don't accept drinks from other people unless you know
them very well or unless you see the "bartender" pour the drink and you have
it in sight the whole time.
Stay sober! If you allow yourself to become even a
little "tipsy", you'll be more careless.
