Ok, this is the one of my pages
which will be addressing things I've seen while cruising around the Windows
Spaces of other people, message boards, and web sites. Let me start this page
by saying I fully believe in freedom of speech. However, I also feel there are
ways to voice your opinions which aren't so abrasive or all out rude.
I was using the search tool at Windows Spaces to
try to locate other pages by and about police officers, hoping to be able to
add them to my friends and link lists. I found a couple of pages, but some of
the stuff I read at those pages I wouldn't want anyone else to read. It made
me angry reading them. I understand some people will write their blogs and
pages about what happened on the job as a police officer (or any other
occupation) and as long as they don't mention any names or locations (unless
quoting a news article or similar sources), I don't have a problem with the
page. The problem is, I now know why so many people have a bad opinion about
anyone in law enforcement. You don't have to experience a "bad" cop
personally, all you have to do is encounter one on the internet. I'm not
trying to judge the officer's ability to enforce the law through what they've
written in their blog or at one of the other places, I only question their
personality and conduct.
So what am I so angry about? One such blog talks
about how the "officer" made a traffic stop. They go on to explain what
happened during the stop. Instead of calmly and politely explaining how
uncooperative the driver was, they have to use all manner of cuss words (and I
won't repeat them here) and called the driver a "jerk" and other such names. I
can only hope this "officer" didn't actually talk to the driver the same way.
I don't care how angry any officer may get,
there's no reason to vent your anger in such a way in a place everyone can
read that nonsense. You're giving every man or woman with a badge a bad name.
The person who ends up looking like a jerk is the person who writes the blog
or posts the page and, in the long run, every law enforcement officer in this
country. People read what you write and think all police officers are just
like you. My advice to you (not that I think you'll read this page but I hope
you find it) is to take some time to read the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics
and start living it. Your conduct, both in your life and in cyberspace should
be beyond reproach. Think before you type and if you find yourself repeatedly
cussing either don't post what you have to say or clean it up before you do.
