When
you read my books, you won't find many physical descriptions of my
characters. I do describe some of their mannerisms and the way they think
about certain situations, emotions, etc. You need to know enough about the
characters to know why they act the way they do, what drives them through
life, and their goals. The ways in which they talk will show their level of
education and/or where they live or have lived. Other than that, it's up to
each reader to picture the characters in their own way. Even when writers
don't provide in-depth descriptions of the people in their novels, I can
picture in my mind what those people look like ... most often someone I know
in real life. I want you to have the same experience. Put yourself in the
role of one of the characters. Choose family members, friends, or your
favorite actors and actresses to fill the roles of the other characters.
That said, I have in mind what each person looks like
and not all of them are people I know. As I introduced each new character, I
formed a mental image of them. After writing the first few chapters, I was
playing around on the internet and found a graphics program to create
portraits of people. I wanted to see if I could capture how I imagined Jake
and Clarissa. You can still imagine them however you choose, but below are
my images of my two main characters.
