I
think the title of this page sums up the many subplots found in my books.
There are more things happening in the lives of police officers than
fighting crime. Just as with people in other career fields, detectives go
home from work and have another part of their lives to live. I think that
too often people view police officers as machines who have only one job to
do. It's true that a man will list police officer or detective as his
occupation, but he can also list several other things as jobs - husband,
father, car maintenance, lawn cutter, etc. Throughout my stories, I
attempt to show the other side of a life in law enforcement. There's no
better way to show how a detective balances his career and his family life
than to tell that part of the story.
Life isn't all about a person's career. Everything
which happens, on and off the job, effects the other areas of that life.
These things develop the person's character and attitudes about life.
Without knowing what happens at home, we'd never know why they say or do
something which goes against what we'd normally expect. By going beyond
the badge, people will learn more about what drives and motivates my main
characters.
