Series  basics  -  Beyond  the  badge

I was asked by one literary agent what I felt made my novel stand out from or significantly add to or alter the popular understanding of the topic. I wrote a short response.

"Most crime novels I've read tend to focus on the crime and how it gets solved. I believe I've written my novel in such a way as to offer insight into what makes the characters do what they do or act the way they act. The histories provided for many of my characters, as well as things they say during their conversations, reveal a lot more about the people. While there are people who are only interested in the crime and how it gets solved, my novel shows how life goes on beyond the badge."

I think the title of this page sums up the many subplots found in my books. There are more things happening in the lives of police officers than fighting crime. Just as with people in other career fields, detectives go home from work and have another part of their lives to live. I think that too often people view police officers as machines who have only one job to do. It's true that a man will list police officer or detective as his occupation, but he can also list several other things as jobs - husband, father, car maintenance, lawn cutter, etc. Throughout my stories, I attempt to show the other side of a life in law enforcement. There's no better way to show how a detective balances his career and his family life than to tell that part of the story.
Life isn't all about a person's career. Everything which happens, on and off the job, effects the other areas of that life. These things develop the person's character and attitudes about life. Without knowing what happens at home, we'd never know why they say or do something which goes against what we'd normally expect. By going beyond the badge, people will learn more about what drives and motivates my main characters.

"I can never forget you. You mean more to me than anything in this world. I think you deserve a party more than I do for just putting up with all of the stress and worry over the past twenty years. From the day I met you, you've stood by me through it all."
